At Phocuswright 2025, discover how Indicio is shaping the future of travel through privacy-protecting decentralized identity, globally interoperable Digital Travel Credentials, and secure authentication and delegated authority for AI agents and systems.

By Helen Garneau

Phocuswright 2025 is around the corner, and Indicio is ready for a dynamic conversation in travel technology as our CEO, Heather Dahl, joins experts across the industry at the Technology Industry Roundtable to discuss the future of travel innovation.

From digital identity to AI and data privacy, technology is transforming how travelers move, interact with, and experience the world — and Indicio is spearheading this change through its market-leading position in decentralized identity solutions and global partnerships.

We’re defining how secure, seamless, privacy-preserving digital travel works with ground-breaking deployments that give our customer first-mover advantages.

Here are the conversations we’re most excited for at Phocuswright.

Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs)

Digital Travel Credentials have moved from theory to deployment and Indicio customers are using them to move passengers through borders and checkpoints faster, reduce manual verification costs and error, while improving security.

By combining document validation, liveness checking and face mapping in a Verifiable Credential aligned with ICAO DTC specifications, Digital Travel Credentials represent the strongest form of digital identity available. Taking just minutes to create and reusable until they expire, DTCs enable pre-authorized travel, seamless authentication across the travel ribbon, and seamless border crossing that’s up to four-times faster than any other solution.

Added to a travel app, and with simple mobile verifier software, they also provide a way to fully integrate a travel or tourist experience with all the services a traveler or tourist might need from hotel check-in to event ticketing and provable authorization for payments (negating the risk of chargeback fraud).

And by combining authenticated biometrics with vital guest or passenger information, many staff-intensive processes can be automated with the assurance that the credential presented is bound to the person presenting it.

The benefits are a secure, seamless, privacy-preserving experience for travelers all manageable from their mobile device without fuss or friction or waiting in line.

AI and Verifiable Credentials for travel customer service

AI is transforming customer service across the travel industry, but without verifiable identity, it’s just a guessing game. When AI systems and people can’t confirm who’s on the other end, it’s a recipe for disaster — with the added stakes that AI now has access to all their data.

Indicio Proven is both an AI-resistant way to authenticate identity and data and a way to secure AI agents and systems from identity fraud.

Here’s how it works: we give AI agents Verifiable Credentials so that they can prove they belong to your organization. And we give your customers Verifiable Credentials so they can prove to the AI agents that they are your customers. They instantly verify each other; then the agent asks permission to access the customer’s data.

Remember, the nature of a Verifiable Credential is that you can’t fake where it came from and you can’t alter the information inside it without the credential malfunctioning.

With this trust, and with the addition of delegated authority (the AI agent asks permission to share your data with other authenticated AI agents), airlines, hotels, booking platforms have a complete end-to-end trust network for AI agents to perform their tasks with maximal efficiency and effectiveness and minimal customer input. The kicker: it also makes compliance with GDPR so much simpler. At every step, the AI agent has auditable consent to share the customer’s data.

Age assurance technology in travel

From booking family vacations to verifying eligibility for youth or senior discounts, age assurance plays a bigger role in travel than most people likely realize.

Indicio’s Verifiable Credential technology makes age-verification instant, assured, and auditable.

A person can confirm their age without revealing unnecessary personal details — or even their actual age (some Indicio credentials allow zero-knowledge proofs).

It’s a simple, privacy-preserving solution that helps travel companies meet GDPR requirements for data and purpose minimization — and a powerful way to build trust with customers.

Government DTC-2 type deployments

The next step in Digital Travel Credentials is direct government issuance along with a person’s physical passport.

Having been the first company to successfully deploy a Digital Travel Credential for international travel derived by a person from their passport (aligning with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s DTC-1 specification), Indicio is now at the forefront of deploying credentials aligned with ICAO DTC-2 specifications for border management.

At Phocuswright, we’re eager to talk to policymakers, regulators, and innovators about our DTC-2 type deployments, and to advance this next phase of digital travel infrastructure.

Building for the European Union Digital Identity (EUDI)

Indicio’s partners and customers are using our technology to issue and verify digital credentials that align with the European Union’s Digital Identity and wallet requirements.

Why do they choose Indicio? Because we make it easy to connect the world to Europe and Europe to the world. Indicio was the first to combine IATA’s OneID with a DTC-1 type credential for international travel and border crossing, using one digital wallet in one seamless journey.

Not every country is going to use a single credential format. Canada and India have chosen a different format to the EU. Many people will also start using mobile driver’s licenses (mDL) for domestic travel.

Interoperability is the key to preventing a Babel of digital wallets and credentials. And that is where Indicio leads. We’re making the world easily connectable, so travelers can seamlessly authenticate their identity no matter where they are.

We make this easy for customers by providing all the most popular credential formats,  a white-label digital wallet compatible with EUDI and global standards and specifications, and a mobile SDK that allows you to add Verifiable Credentials to your Android and IoS apps.

We also have developed — in tandem with the Decentralized Identity Foundation — a flexible, decentralized way to ensure credential trust (aka governance) across jurisdictions.

It’s this combination of features — authenticated biometrics, document validation, identity for AI agents — and components that enable our customers to rapidly implement this technology and rapidly see results.

If you’re heading to Phocuswright this year, don’t miss the chance to meet with Heather Dahl and talk about what’s next for digital identity in travel — because with Indicio, the future is already happening.

Book time with Heather for a one-on-one meeting at Phocuswright 2025.
