Why Digital Travel Credentials provide the strongest digital identity assurance

by indiciowebsite | Oct 21, 2025

Stop fraud before it starts. Indicio Proven closes the door on account takeovers, social engineering scams and deepfakes with secure, interoperable Digital Travel Credentials — the highest level of digital identity assurance and the easiest to use.

By Helen Garneau

Identity fraud is rising around the world, and travelers are starting to lose confidence that airlines and hotels can keep their personal data safe. More stories about new kinds of scams are coming out using AI-generated deepfakes, fake documents, and other digital tricks that can fool identity systems. As airports and airlines depend more on facial recognition and other biometric tools, the risk of these attacks becomes a serious threat to the entire travel experience.

Think of how this plays out in real life. A thief uses a stolen credit card to buy an airline ticket and checks in with a forged passport. An impostor calls into an airline call center with a stolen password, takes over the victim’s account, and steals their miles. A criminal walks through a border checkpoint using false biometrics. Each case happens because identity cannot be verified in real time, directly from the traveler.

Digital Travel Credentials fix this problem.

A Digital Travel Credential — DTC — is a secure, digital version of a passport that aligns with    specifications outlined by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a global body that was responsible for standardizing physical passports.

Currently, there are two types of implementable DTCs: One issued by a government along with a physical passport (DTC-2), or one issued by an organization, such as an airline or hotel, by way of data derived from a valid passport and biometrically authenticated against the rightful passport holder (DTC-1).

The data in each DTC is digitally  signed, which provides a way to cryptographically prove its origin (who issued it) and that it hasn’t been tampered with. The credential is held by the passport holder in a digital wallet on their mobile device, which provides two additional layers of binding (biometric/code to first unlock the device and then the wallet).

Here’s what makes the DTC a deepfake buster

First, you can’t re-engineer the cryptography using AI to alter the data. Second, each person is able to carry an authenticated biometric with them for verification. It’s like having a second you to prove who you are. The biometric template in the credential can be automatically compared with a liveness check, so authentication is not only instant, it doesn’t require the verifying party to store biometric data.

The DTC completely transforms identity verification and fraud prevention in one go.

The upshot is that identity authentication no longer needs usernames, passwords, centralized data storage, multifactor authentication, or increasingly complex and expensive layers of security; instead, customers hold their data and present it for seamless, cryptographic authentication, which can be done anywhere using simple mobile software.

Their data is protected, you’re protected, and your operations can be automated and streamlined for better customer experiences and reduced cost.

The easy switch for implementing DTC credentials

Indicio Proven® is the most advanced market solution for issuing, holding, and verifying interoperable DTC-1 and DTC-2 aligned credentials, with options for the leading three Verifiable Credential formats, SD JWT VC, AnonCreds, and mDL.

Proven is equipped with advanced biometric and document authentication tools, and our partnership with Regula enables us to validate identity documents from 254 countries and territories for issuance as Verifiable Credentials. It has a white-label digital wallet compatible with global digital identity standards and a mobile SDK for adding Verifiable Credentials to your apps.

It’s easy and quick to add to your existing biometric infrastructure, removing the need to rip and replace identity systems. It can effortlessly scale to country level deployment, and best of all, it’s significantly less expensive than centralized identity management.

Proven also follows the latest open standards, including eIDAS 2.0 and the EUDI framework, lowering regulatory risks, preserving traveler privacy, and opening markets that would otherwise be off limits.

Shut down fraud before it starts

Fraud should never be accepted as part of doing business. With Proven DTCs, airlines can defend against ticket and loyalty fraud before they even talk to a passenger. Airports can trust the traveler and the data they receive because it matches the credential and the verified government records. Hotels can check in guests with confidence, no passport photocopying or manual lookups required — and they have a simple and powerful way to reduce chargeback fraud.

Indicio Proven removes legacy vulnerabilities to identity fraud and closes the gaps between systems so identity can be trusted from start to finish. It protects revenue, safeguards customer relationships, and restores confidence across every stage of travel.

It’s time to stop fraud, simplify identity verification, and give travelers a secure, seamless experience with Indicio Proven.

Contact Indicio today and see how you can protect your business and your customers with Indicio Proven.
