Gartner’s 2025 Market Guide identifies Indicio as the only vendor explicitly addressing decentralized identity for AI agents and machines. Indicio ProvenAI provides a way for AI agents to hold verifiable identities, authenticate customers, obtain consent to access personal data, and use delegate authority to share that data with other verifiable agents in an autonomous and compliant way.

Gartner’s Market Guide for Decentralized Identity marks an important moment for the digital identity verification market. The 2025 report reports a clear shift away from experimental pilots and toward real-world deployment of decentralized identity infrastructure. Among a diverse set of vendors, Indicio is recognized not only as a representative provider of decentralized identity solutions, but as the only company addressing a critical digital identity challenge: Verifiable identities for AI agents and decentralized governance for autonomous systems.
This distinction matters.
Much of the decentralized identity conversation to date has focused on human users: digital wallets, government-issued credentials, workforce identity, and consumer use cases. Gartner’s analysis looks further ahead.
As organizations deploy AI agents and autonomous systems to perform tasks and interact with one another and across systems to do so, those agents must be able to prove who they are, what they are authorized to do, and under what conditions they can access systems and data.
Traditional federated identity and access management approaches were not designed for this Agent-powered world. Certificates, shared secrets, and static credentials struggle to scale across dynamic environments where machines act independently, collaborate with other agents, and operate across organizational boundaries using personal or high-value data
Gartner points to decentralized identity as a viable alternative, particularly for newer devices and AI-driven systems that require stronger assurance, delegated authority, and clearer trust relationships.
Within this context, Gartner explicitly points to Indicio Proven AI as a solution for managing AI agents in a decentralized way. No other vendor in the report is singled out in this way .
The reference appears alongside discussions of emerging machine-driven use cases, including IoT, operational technology, smart vehicles, digital twins, and product lifecycle tracking. All of these scenarios depend on the same core requirement: the ability to identify, authenticate, and authorize machines without relying on centralized identity stores.
Gartner’s inclusion of AI agents in the decentralized identity narrative signals a broader market shift. AI systems are no longer confined to experiments or narrowly-scoped tasks. They are being embedded into enterprise workflows, supply chains, financial systems, and digital services.
As they take on more responsibility, the question of trust becomes unavoidable. Who issued this agent its authority? What data is it allowed to access? For how long? Can that authority be verified cryptographically and audited over time?
Indicio’s work in decentralized identity for AI agents directly addresses these questions, and provides a way to prevent fake AI agents from exploiting high-level access to data — something legacy identity solutions cannot do.
Additionally, Indicio’s decentralized governance, which is based on the Decentralized Identity Foundation’s Credential Trust Establishment specification, allows companies to create trust networks for authenticatable agents, making it easy to establish and maintain human governance over autonomous systems.
The Market Guide also cautions that the decentralized identity market will experience consolidation as adoption accelerates. Gartner advises organizations to work with vendors that demonstrate real deployments and the ability to support evolving use cases over time. Indicio’s recognition, particularly in the emerging area of AI and machine identity, reflects a level of maturity and foresight that sets it apart.
As decentralized identity moves into its execution phase, the scope is expanding. Beyond proving a person’s identity, it is about establishing trust across entire digital ecosystems, including the AI agents and machines that will increasingly act on our behalf.
Gartner’s report makes clear that this future is already taking shape, and Indicio is helping define what comes next.
