Oil & Gas · Verifiable Credentials
Verifiable credentials for oil and gas: know everyone on the asset is cleared to work.
Verifiable credentials for oil and gas are tamper-proof digital proofs of a worker’s identity, offshore medical, safety training, competencies, and authorizations, each issued by the authority that owns the record, carried by the worker, and checked at any heliport, gate, or rig, online or offline. One check answers every question that gates the job: who they are, whether they are fit, whether they are qualified, and whether they are authorized.
Catch a problem credential before the worker travels, not after they land offshore.
The exposure
What does a problem credential cost an operator?
Operators spend heavily on access and identity, and still the credential problem shows up at the worst possible moment: during mobilization, or offshore, once the worker has already flown. A lapsed offshore medical, an expired BOSIET, a revoked authorization, an invalid permit. Caught late, each one means a wasted long-haul flight or helicopter seat, a crew shortage on the asset, and downtime while a replacement is found.
Worse than the cost is the exposure. An unverified, unqualified, or unauthorized person on a remote, hard-to-evacuate asset is a safety failure and a liability the operator carries. It is the finding an HSE lead never wants to explain and the delay Operations can’t afford.
Why it pays
What do operators gain from verifiable credentials?
Money saved
Stop paying for problems you could catch at home
When a worker’s credentials are confirmed valid and complete before they travel, there are no wasted flights or helicopter seats, no last-minute scramble for a substitute, and far fewer hours re-checking the same PDFs by hand.
Money made
Keep the asset crewed and producing
Every worker who lands cleared-to-work the first time is a shift that runs on schedule. Every gate that clears without a manual chase is production that isn’t waiting on admin.
Risk reduced
No wrong person on a remote asset
Identity, medical, safety tickets, and authorizations are proven at the gate. A revoked ticket fails the next check the moment it changes, and because the worker holds their own data, there is no central store to breach.
The solution
What are verifiable credentials for oil and gas?
Know they can work, not just who they are. A verifiable credential answers the whole question a paper check and a face scan leave open, and it does it at the point of work.
A badge
Proves possession
"I have a badge." Not that it’s yours.
A biometric
Proves identity
"I am the person enrolled."" Not that you’re qualified.
A verifiable credential
Proves readiness
"I am qualified, fit, and authorized to work, right now.""
What the worker’s credential carries
- Identity and right-to-work — passport, visa, national ID, offshore worker identity.
- Offshore medical and fitness-to-work — the status, not the record.
- Safety training — BOSIET, FOET, HUET, MIST, H2S.
- Competencies and operator tickets — CompEx, API certifications, certificates of competency.
- Work permits and authorizations — the approval that gates this asset.
Each credential is issued by the authority that already owns the record: a training provider, a medical examiner, a regulator, the employer. It is bound to the worker’s identity, and to a biometric where one is captured. The credential does not replace those registries. It makes what they issue portable and instantly verifiable at the point of work.
How it works
How do verifiable credentials work offshore?
A verifiable credential is a shipping container for identity and data. Before the container, cargo was loaded loose and every port trusted every handler. One standard box let any crane, ship, or port move it without knowing what was inside. A verifiable credential is that standard box for identity: the issuer seals the data with a digital signature, the worker carries it in a wallet on a phone or wearable, and any authorized reader can check it. No custom integration required.
Issue
The authority that owns each record signs it into a credential and binds it to the worker’s identity. An ID check adds assurance where a biometric is captured.
Carry
The worker holds the whole pack in one wallet on a phone or wearable, under their control, and shares only by consent. One worker, one wallet, many trusted credentials.
Verify
At the gate, verifying software runs the cryptography and confirms two things: who issued each credential, and that nothing has been altered. Online or off.
That is all the check needs, which is why it works anywhere:
- No call to the issuer.
- No central database to query.
- No third-party ID provider to check in with.
You are not eyeballing a document and hoping it’s real. You are checking a cryptographic signature, the credential's authenticity and integrity, which can’t be forged. That is how the check bypasses AI-generated fakes.
Works offline
Can you verify credentials offshore with no signal?
Yes.
Rigs and FPSOs lose connectivity, and hazardous zones ban personal phones. A check that depends on a live system or a call back to the issuer simply can’t happen where the work happens. A verifiable credential is different: it is checked locally, against the worker’s own device or wearable, at every control point on the installation, connected or completely offline.
At the heliport and gate
The worker presents their credential from a phone or badge. Identity and right-to-work are confirmed before they ever take a seat.
In the hazardous zones
Personal phones aren't allowed in ATEX and IECEx areas, so intrinsically safe devices and wearables hold and present the credential over BLE or NFC.
At the muster point
The credential that grants access also counts who’s on board. Access, person-on-board, and mustering all run off one credential: the headcount you need in an emergency.
Offline isn’t a limitation to work around. On an offshore asset it’s the whole point, and it’s what rules out a cloud certificate app.
Direction of travel
Why adopt verifiable credentials now?
A proven model
Aviation already runs seamless, trusted digital identity at scale on ICAO-aligned Digital Travel Credentials. The same standards are coming to the water.
Regulation with hard dates
EU digital identity wallets are mandated across the EU by the end of 2026, and regulated industries must accept them by the end of 2027. This is the regulatory timeline, not an oil-and-gas-specific mandate, but it sets the direction.
Your workers arrive wallet-ready
EU citizens will soon carry digital identity wallets by law. The operator that can already accept them is ahead of the curve, not scrambling to catch up.
Aviation developed the standards. Europe mandated the wallets. Adopt verifiable credentials now on your terms, or later on someone else’s.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are verifiable credentials for oil and gas?
Verifiable credentials for oil and gas are tamper-proof digital proofs of a worker’s identity, offshore medical, safety training, competencies, and authorizations. Each one is issued by the authority that owns the record, carried by the worker in a digital wallet, and checked at any heliport, gate, or rig, online or offline. One check answers the questions that gate the job: who they are, whether they are fit, whether they are qualified, and whether they are authorized to work.
Can verifiable credentials be verified offshore with no internet?
Yes. A verifiable credential carries its own cryptographic proof, so it is checked locally on the worker’s device or wearable, with no call to the issuer and no central database to query. That is why it works where an offshore asset actually is: at the heliport, the gate, the hazardous zone, and the muster point, even with no signal at all.
Do verifiable credentials replace OPITO, flag-state, or medical records?
No. The registries and issuers stay the source of truth. A verifiable credential makes what they issue portable and instantly verifiable at the point of work; it does not replace accreditation or the systems that grant it.
How do verifiable credentials reduce GDPR and data-breach risk?
The worker holds their own credential, data, and biometric, so there is no central gallery of identities to breach. Verification also discloses only the fact that is needed, valid BOSIET, medically fit, authorized for this asset, not the underlying record. The data a verifier never collects cannot be leaked, breached, or sued over.
How is this different from a digital certificate app?
A certificate app cannot verify without a signal, does not travel with the worker from operator to operator, and cannot be read by the next port or flag. A verifiable credential is checked locally and works fully offline, travels with the worker rig to rig, and is built on open standards any authorized reader can check.
What credentials can a worker's wallet hold?
Identity and right-to-work, offshore medical and fitness, safety training such as BOSIET, FOET, HUET and MIST, competencies and operator tickets such as CompEx and API certifications, and asset-specific work permits and authorizations. Each is bound to the worker’s identity, and to a biometric where one is captured.
