Indicio.tech finishes a working “mediator agent” and contributes its code to Hyperledger Aries and ACA-Py making it possible to communicate verifiable credentials to mobile devices via open source standards. Indicio is hosting a freely available test mediator agent for developers.
Indicio.tech, a professional services firm specializing in decentralized identity, today announced the launch—and availability for open testing—of the Indicio Mediator Agent. The company is also donating the underlying code to the open source Hyperledger Aries project.
“It’s simple,” says Indicio CEO Heather Dahl. “If verifiable digital credentials are to be exchanged and identity verified, people need to be able to manage them on their mobile devices through an app. The mediator agent can be thought of as the pipe that enables this to happen.”
“The mediator is the tool that provides a cloud-based connection point to send and receive requests between mobile holders and issuers and verifiers,” says Indicio CTO, Ken Ebert. “We built it to make our clients’ projects work, and we contributed it to the open source community because a working mediator agent is critical to widespread adoption of decentralized identity.”
The Indicio Mediator Agent is the company’s latest contribution to Aries Cloud Agent Python (ACA-Py) and the Aries Toolbox. Following RFC 0211: Mediator Coordination, Indicio built on the work of the open-source community to make mediation interoperable and vendor agnostic. This expands the opportunities for mobile wallet implementations.
As part of these contributions, mediation can be managed and debugged through ACA-Py’s built-in Admin REST API or the Aries Toolbox.
“We believe in an open-source foundation for decentralized identity,” says Dahl. “But as a professional services company, we couldn’t wait for critical technology to spontaneously mature—and, more importantly, our clients couldn’t wait either. So we’re filling the technical gaps, and making the code available for everyone to get building.”

To bring developers up to date on this latest contribution to the open source community, Indicio has prepared an instructor-led workshop focusing on the use and application of the Mediator Agent. Developers will learn how to access the repository, how to use an agent, and then discuss possible use cases.

Indicio-hosted Mediator Agent ready for developer testing
Those who want to build solutions using a mediator agent now can use Indicio’s free, hosted version of the mediator for testing, development, and demonstrations. This will shorten the time to develop proof-of-concept and pilot solutions, and help with ensuring interoperability.
Anyone in the decentralized identity community will have access to the mediator agent code via the open source contribution in the ACA-Py library.
