Every person who clocked in this morning was verified at some point. A license was verified, a certification was confirmed, a background screen was run. If management is careful, this is all tracked in a spreadsheet with expiration dates and reminders before each one comes due, and where there’s immediate liability, that worker is denied access until a new cert or license is verified.
Not only is this resource-consuming, it’s a system that defies perfection. Every cert is a single point of liability the moment it lapses: if anything goes wrong, that lapse is a fine, or worse, a lawsuit. That’s the same problem in a hospital, a warehouse, a staffing agency, and on a job site: a workforce that was qualified is constantly becoming unqualified.

What a digital workforce credential proves
A badge tells you a badge worked. A verifiable credential tells you who is holding the badge, and what they are cleared to do right now. It lives in a wallet on the worker’s own phone, bound to them by a biometric that is, in turn, bound to their device. It can’t be shared, stolen, or forged. It carries critical facts about their employment: identity, license, certifications, background screen, training. Each one is instantly checkable on the spot without a call to a database. The check works online or off, over a tap, Bluetooth, or a face match. The credential stops working the moment a cert expires.
Keeping credentials current isn’t only good practice. In some industries it’s required. Hospitals, for example, must stay accredited by an oversight body called the Joint Commission, which means repeatedly confirming that every doctor and nurse still holds a valid license, not just checking once at hire. An issuer, the authority that has checked a worker’s identity and qualifications (an employer, a licensing board, a training provider), signs the credential cryptographically. The worker holds it on their phone and presents it when asked. The verifier — your gate, door, or login — confirms three things instantly: that the credential came from an issuer you trust, that it is still current, and that nothing in it has been altered or revoked.
The verifier does this by cryptographically proving the issuer’s digital signature, not by calling the issuer, or checking against a database. There is no store of identities or biometrics to breach, which keeps you clear of a whole category of privacy risk. And when a certification expires or is pulled, the credential reflects it in real time. The lapse shows up the next time the worker checks in.
